Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present the current situation of plant biotechnology research worldwide and in Latin America. Currently, the development of new innovations has led to biotechnology applications for the development of agriculture in the world and Latin America, which has
generated an impact in developed countries with genetic and molecular engineering techniques and modified organisms. In recent years, cutting-edge research has been carried out that has allowed a change in the traditional techniques used. In this regard, biotechnology offers a possible solution
to many problems that affect agricultural production in the world due to adverse biotic and abiotic conditions, as well as the unstoppable climate change that affects the entire population. However, there are public imbalances surrounding government decisions that denote developed countries to
give a correct and beneficial use to all and not to a single sector, as indicated by the FAO. With appropriate guidance, biotechnology will offer increased agricultural productivity for the present and future, because its applications are also associated with potential risks, making it  necessary to develop responsible policies to ensure that the growing world population is able to produce and access food.
